In battles which must be won ‘hostage’ should be a nonexistent word. No one should be in  a position to keep you, your near and dear ones, or your thoughts as hostage.  The same works backwards too, under no circumstances you should get into making hostages out of your enemies and adversaries. It just takes too much in terms of mind space and has fairly complex unpredictable consequence. Cut and dry works better than wet and dirty.

When you keep someone as a hostage, you mortgage your thoughts for a game of dice.  It is suicidal and akin to riding a tiger, the going would be super fast if you manage to reach home and the tiger doesn’t drop you.  God forbid if you fall, the tiger would surly ensure that your battle is lost.

Keep it cut & dry and straight & simple…. Because Some Battles Must be Won.
